Robert "Rob" Douglas Friend (born January 23, 1981 in Rosetown , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian soccer player . He is 1.95 meters tall and describes himself as a player who “is able to use his body in the penalty area in the game”.
Career
Club career
First career steps in Norway and the Netherlands
In 2003, the then 22-year-old Friend moved to the Norwegian club Moss FK . He was only active there for a year, then stayed in Norway, but then played for Molde FK . In 2006 he moved to SC Heerenveen . In early 2007 he was loaned to Heracles Almelo before the striker moved to the second division Borussia Mönchengladbach on July 1, 2007 .
Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hertha BSC
He scored his first goal on September 17, 2007 in the away game in Aue , which Mönchengladbach won 3-2. On October 26, 2007, Friend scored all three goals for Mönchengladbach in the 3-1 away win in Fürth . For him it was the first "three-pack" in his professional career. Overall, Friend scored 18 goals in 33 games in the 2007/08 season; thus he contributed to the immediate resurgence of the "foals". His current contract was extended early in April 2008 to the end of June 2012, but he signed a three-year contract with second division Hertha BSC in June 2010 , for which he made his debut on August 20, 2010 in the game against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen when he was directly in the starting line-up was, but injured in the 18th minute of the game and was substituted for Marco Djuricin .
Eintracht Frankfurt
In the summer break of 2011, Friend moved to the Bundesliga relegated Eintracht Frankfurt . In the course of the 2013/14 season , however, Friend was used less and less and left the club on January 13, 2014 at his own request and also dissolved his existing contract with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Los Angeles Galaxy
On January 13, 2014, Friend moved to the North American Major League Soccer after his contract termination and signed a contract until December 31, 2014 with Los Angeles Galaxy . On December 10, 2014, he announced his retirement from professional football.
National team
Rob Friend has made 30 appearances for his country's senior team since his debut on January 18, 2003 . On September 4, 2006, he scored his first international goal against Jamaica . In qualifying, he missed participation in the 2010 World Cup with Canada .
With the Canadian U-20 selection , Friend took part in the 2001 Junior World Cup in Argentina and was used there in the game against Brazil. With the U23 he played at the "Jeux de la Francophonie" 2001 and scored six goals in a 14-0 victory in a game in the Olympic qualification against the US Virgin Islands .
