Paula Elisabeth Cerioli

Paula Elisabeth Cerioli (* as Costanza Cerioli on January 16, 1816 in Soncino , Lombardy ; † December 24, 1865 in Comonte near Bergamo , Italy ) was an Italian founder.

Life

She came from the Piedmontese noble family Cerioli and at the age of 19 was married against her will to a 60-year-old count. After her husband and three sons died, Costanza Cerioli gave most of her fortune to the poor. With the rest she founded the order of the "Brothers of the Holy Family" (Italian: "Pretie Fratelli della S. Famiglia") in Martinengo near Brescia in 1856 and Bergamo the order of the "Sisters of the Holy Family" (Italian: " Suore della S. Famiglia ”) for the education of orphans and the children of poor farmers. 1901 recognized Pope Leo XIII. the founding of orders.

The two religious communities were later united to form the Congregation of the Holy Family of Bergamo .

She was beatified on March 19, 1950 and canonized by John Paul II in 2004 . Their festival is December 23rd .
