Michael "Ballfort" Harforth (born February 9, 1959 in Karlsruhe) is a former German football player .
Harforth stormed for Karlsruher SC as early as 1966 as a seven-year-old , later he was appointed to the youth team of the DFB . In 1977 he moved up to the professional squad of the KSC and came on the third match day against FV Würzburg 04 for his first appearance in the Second League South. The Karlsruher, who is classified as a huge talent, could not play his way into the core formation of the Karlsruhe team in the first three seasons and often only came to short appearances. After KSC made the leap into the Bundesliga in 1980, Harforth moved to the second division club Freiburger FC , but returned after just one year. After another moderately successful season at KSC, he completed a year-long guest appearance in the amateur camp at SV Wiesbaden .
From 1983 he stayed with Karlsruher SC for nine years. The form curve of the attacking midfielder resembled the "elevator mentality" of the KSC in the 1970s and 1980s: a constant up and down. Harforth, who had his strengths in his good technique and game overview, but often showed weaknesses in the end, developed In the mid-1980s under coach Winfried Schäfer to playmaker and leading player and at times also wore the captain's armband. Schäfer described Michael Harforth's value for the team as follows: “Without Michael, no ideas, without ideas, no goals.” After advancing with Karlsruher SC in 1987, he joined the Bundesliga for five years and then left the club.
He was then active in the second division MSV Duisburg (1992/93) and Hannover 96 (1993-1995). After ending his career in 1995, he returned to the field in 1996 and played for the regional league team SG Egelsbach , where he took over the coaching position with Hubertus Baumert after coach Herbert Schäty was dismissed. After the Egelsbacher's relegation, he played one last season at SV Darmstadt 98 , where he also acted as an assistant coach. From November 1998 he trained the then Bahraini champion and cup winner West Riffa .
Harforth came to 181 Bundesliga games (all for Karlsruher SC) and scored 14 goals.
Michael Harforth has been playing for SC Ellmau as a hobby since April 2009.
