Dietmar Klinger (born January 8, 1958 in Essen ) is a former German soccer player . His son Mario is also a professional soccer player.
Career
Klinger began his career at Schwarz-Weiß Essen , where he was part of the professional squad from the 1975/76 season. In the winter break of the 1977/78 season he moved to local rivals Rot-Weiss Essen , with whom he played in the 2nd Bundesliga until 1983 . From the 1983/84 season he played with Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the Bundesliga . He won the DFB Cup with Bayer 05 Uerdingen in 1985 and was part of the team that achieved the miracle of Grotenburg in the European Cup . It was the cup winners' competition in 1985/86 when Dynamo Dresden was defeated 7: 3 and Uerdingen only failed in the semi-finals to Atlético Madrid ; Dietmar Klinger made eight appearances in Europe this season. He played four games in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup and was eliminated in the round of 16 against FC Barcelona . In 1991 he left Bayer 05 Uerdingen. Klinger was reamateurised and played for one season each with Wuppertaler SV and Schwarz-Weiß Essen in the Oberliga Nordrhein , before ending his career in 1993.
For Bayer 05 Uerdingen, Dietmar Klinger played a total of 208 Bundesliga games, he also made 234 second division appearances and a total of 35 DFB Cup games.
Klinger is assistant trainer at Sportfreunde Niederwenigern and works for the city administration of Essen.
