David Allen Zdrilic (born April 13, 1974 in Sydney ; Croatian spelling: David Zdrilić , [ ˈzdrilitɕ ]) is an Australian football player and coach of Croatian descent. Since summer 2017 he has been training as an assistant coach for the U17s at RB Leipzig .

Career

Zdrilic played for several years in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga . After playing for Sydney United from 1993 to 1997 , the striker moved to Europe for FC Aarau , from where, after only one season, he moved to Germany to the then second division club SSV Ulm 1846 , for whom he scored twelve goals in 33 games in the first season shot and with which he was promoted to the First Bundesliga. In the first division he played 22 games for Ulm and scored six goals. This made him the second most successful goalscorer of the team behind the Dutchman Hans van de Haar (ten goals). After SSV Ulm was relegated again after one season, Zdrilic moved to SpVgg Unterhaching , for whom he scored a goal in 16 games in the Bundesliga. After the club was relegated from the 1st Bundesliga in 2001 , Zdrilic played seven more times in the 2nd Bundesliga the following season .

In 2002 he moved to England for Walsall FC , 2003 after Scotland to FC Aberdeen . In the summer of 2004 Zdrilic returned to Germany for the second division club Eintracht Trier . He played eleven games (no goal) for the club and returned to Australia the following winter for personal reasons . There he signed with Sydney FC in the A-League . After his contract expired in early 2009, he rejoined Sydney United , for which he had been active from 1993 to 1997. After just one year in which he scored nine more goals in 33 games, he ended his active career there in 2010.

National team

Zdrilic played his first international match for Australia against New Zealand in 1997 . He played a total of 30 international matches in which he scored 20 goals, including eight goals in a 31-0 win against American Samoa on April 11, 2001. 2000 and 2004, Zdrilic was with the team Oceania champions . He has been a member of Australia's national beach soccer team since 2013 .

Trainer

Shortly after the end of his career in 2010, he took over as coach for a few months at his last club, Sydney United. From 2015 to 2017 he coached the U20 of Sydney FC . In the summer of 2017 he moved to Germany and became assistant coach at RB Leipzig's U17 .

TV career

Between his active time as a player and moving to Germany as a coach in 2017, Zdrilic worked as a commentator, co-host and expert for the Australian TV broadcaster SBS . He supported the broadcasting team on a weekly basis with league games and broadcasts of the 2014 World Cup . He also worked for sports programs on the private broadcaster Nine Network . In 2015 he received the Logie Award for Most Outstanding Sports Coverage for his work at the 2014 World Cup .
