history
In 1928 the private leased Charleston Airport Corporation , a 700 acre (about 280 hectares ) area on the site of a former phosphate mine of South Carolina Mining and Manufacturing Company to set up an airport there. The official inauguration took place on August 10, 1929. In 1931, the city issued bonds worth $ 60,000 to purchase a stake in the airport company. Until the Second World War, the city levied an additional tax of 0.5 million to finance operations .
In the 1930s, the airport was expanded, also with funds from the Works Projects Administration , and received three runways between 3,000 ft (914 m) and 4,000 ft (1,219 m) in length.
From 1942 to 1946 the airport was taken over by the United States Army Air Corps , but civil flight operations continued. During that time, the Army invested $ 12 million and expanded the airport to 2050 acres. After the end of the Second World War , the city built a reception building inaugurated in 1949, partly financed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration .
In the 1980s, the airport acquired 1,300 acres (about 530 hectares) of land south of the previous Georgia-Pacific site and built a new terminal building there, which was inaugurated in 1985. The building was also given an international area for military purposes.
