The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort or MCAS Beaufort is a military airfield of the US Marine Corps in the small town of Beaufort in Beaufort County in South Carolina , a state of the United States on the east coast of the country. The base has been used as a naval airfield since 1943, initially under the name Naval Air Station Beaufort until 1960 .
Todays use
Marine Aircraft Group 31 is currently the main user. It currently (2016) operates four squadrons of the F / A-18A / C and two of the F / A-18D.
The base will be the East Coast station for the F-35B . The training center for this variant of the F-35 is currently being built here. In addition to the USMC, F-35 pilots from other nations are also trained here. A first F-35B school relay arrived in Beaufort in July 2014.
On September 28, 2018, a USMC F-35B crashed near the base. The pilot saved himself with the ejection seat.
