life and work

Cecily Brown, the daughter of the Scottish writer Shena Mackay (* 1944), was born in London. Mackay married Robin Brown in 1964. It wasn't until the age of 21 that Cecily found out that British art critic David Sylvester was her biological father. In 1993 she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from London's Slade School of Art and moved to New York the following year. At the end of the 1990s, her large-format, expressive pictures with erotic scenes caused a sensation. “I use erotic photographs to study the body. I am interested in the emotional content of these models, ”is how Cecily Brown describes her painterly approach. In her pictures, which lie on the border between abstraction and figuration, organic forms and people are hinted at and occasionally only reproduced in bright pink, red, orange and ocher.

Brown's work is influenced by, among others, Nicolas Poussin , Édouard Manet , William Hogarth , Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning . In his more recent pictures, Brown increasingly devoted himself to depicting landscapes, never completely separating from their erotic motifs.

Cecily Brown is collected by major museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum , New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art , New York, and the Tate Gallery , London. She is considered a successful artist of a new expressive painting.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the first comprehensive overview exhibition entitled Cecily Brown: Paintings took place in the Kunsthalle Mannheim in collaboration with Modern Art Oxford in 2005. In 2009, exhibitions dedicated to her followed in the Hamburg Deichtorhallen and in 2010 under the title cecily brown | based on a true story in the Kunstverein der Kestnergesellschaft , Hanover, which was subsequently shown in the GEM, Museum of Contemporary Art, in The Hague until February 2011. In Austria, a monographic exhibition was dedicated to her in the Essl Museum , Klosterneuburg from July 20 to October 7, 2012.

Her works fetch up to 1.2 million euros at auctions, making her one of the most expensive artists of her generation. In the art magazine art , however, Brown criticized the fact that women are still neglected in art : “It's no longer fun. The crazy auctions, the hedge funds with all their money, the trade shows that got out of hand. It all feels greedy, rushed, and overcrowded. A world full of parasites who are not interested in art at all ”.

Cecily Brown has been married to Nicolai Ouroussoff (* 1962), an architecture critic for the New York Times , since 2008 . In 2009 their daughter was born.
