Pierre Howard

Pierre D. Howard (born February 3, 1943 in Decatur , Georgia ) is an American politician . Between 1991 and 1999 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Georgia.

Career

Pierre Howard is the grandson of Congressman William S. Howard (1875–1953). After graduating from the University of Georgia with a law degree and admission to the bar, he began working in the profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1972 and 1990 he was a member of the Georgia Senate . There he was chairman of the Senate Human Resources Committee for 16 years .

In 1990 Howard was elected lieutenant governor of Georgia alongside Zell Miller . He held this office after a re-election between January 13, 1991 and January 11, 1999. His political focus was on family policy. In the 1992 presidential election , he was one of the Democratic electors who officially voted Bill Clinton president . In 1997 he got into his party's primary campaign for the upcoming gubernatorial election. In the middle of this election campaign, however, he announced that he would not stand for candidacy. The reason given was too great a family history. Howard has been married to Nancy Barnes since 1974, with whom he has two grown children.
