Geoffrey L. Duncan (born April 1, 1975 in New Kensington , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Republican Party and has been Vice-Governor of the State of Georgia under Brian Kemp since January 14, 2019 .

Life

Geoff Duncan grew up in Alpharetta , Georgia, and graduated from Chattahoochee High School. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology and played baseball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets university team . From 1996 to 2001 Duncan played for the Miami Marlins in minor league baseball , where he reached the top division Triple-A before he had to end his career due to a shoulder injury. After his baseball career, Duncan started his own marketing company. In April 2016, he sold the company and became Chief Executive Officer of Wellview Health, a healthcare company.

In 2012, Duncan was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives as a Republican Party member . On April 10, 2017, he announced that he would run for the office of lieutenant governor in the 2018 gubernatorial elections. He then resigned from his position in the House of Representatives in September 2017. In the internal party primaries on May 22, 2018, Duncan received 28.8% of the vote, trailing his opponent David Shafer . In the runoff election on July 24, 2018, Duncan finally prevailed against Shafer with 50.16% of the vote. In the gubernatorial election, Duncan was also able to beat his Democratic opponent Sarah Riggs Amico and was thus elected as the new lieutenant governor. The inauguration took place on January 14, 2019.

Geoff Duncan has been married to his longtime partner Brooke Duncan since 2000 and has three sons with her. The family lives near Cumming , Forsyth County, northeast of Atlanta .
