Garland T. Byrd

Garland Turk Byrd (born July 16, 1924 in Reynolds , Georgia , † May 31, 1997 ) was an American politician and from 1959 to 1963 the 4th lieutenant governor of Georgia.

Byrd served in the United States Army from October 1942 to October 1945 during World War II . When he retired from the active, he held the rank of captain and was holder of the Silver and Bronze Star . Byrd attended the University of Georgia from 1946 to 1948 and received his LL.B. -Degree from Emory University . That same year he began working as a lawyer in Butler . He was a member of the Georgia Citizens Council from 1952 to 1954 and was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1947 to 1949 . In 1949 he stepped down to become assistant director of the state Veterans Service Department . His father, Dozier Eugene Byrd , then took over his vacant seat and remained a member of the House of Representatives until 1954. From January 13, 1959 to January 15, 1963 Garland T. Byrd held the office of Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.

Byrd was married to Gloria Elizabeth Whatley (* 1925) since August 22, 1946.
