George Thornewell Smith

George Thornewell Smith (born October 15, 1916 in Mitchell County , Georgia - †  August 23, 2010 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1967 and 1970 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Georgia.

Career

George Smith attended Middle Georgia College and then studied at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College . From 1940 he served in the United States Navy . His military service coincided with the Second World War . After completing a law degree at the University of Georgia and being admitted to the bar in 1948, he began working in this profession in Cairo . There he also worked as a district attorney for a while. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1958 and 1966 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives ; since 1963 he was its president.

In 1966, Smith was elected lieutenant governor of Georgia, alongside Lester Maddox . He held this office between January 11, 1967 and January 12, 1971. Then Maddox took over this office because he was not allowed to run for governor again according to a constitutional clause . After his tenure as Lieutenant Governor ended, George Smith practiced law again. In 1974, he unsuccessfully ran for the governor of Georgia. He served as a judge since 1976, first on the Court of Appeals until 1980 and then on the Supreme Court of Georgia until 1991 . He was then a member of the Executive Committee of the Appellate Judges Conference until his death .
