ccMixter.org is a music community site promoting the remix culture. Samples, remixes and a cappella soundtracks are made available on it under a Creative Commons for downloading and for further use in your own works. Works based on these audio tracks can in turn be uploaded and presented to visitors. As of November 13, 2011, more than 6,000 samples and 3,000 a capellas as well as over 15,000 remixes can be downloaded, including audio tracks by the Beastie Boys and David Byrne .

The website was originally started as a project by Creative Commons and handed over to ArtisTech Media, a company managed by some ccMixter members, in October 2009. CcHost is used as the platform.

Calls for remixes

By releasing individual tracks by well-known musicians such as DJ Vadim , Bucky Jonson (members of The Black Eyed Peas Live Band) and Trifonic under a Creative Commons license, the portal and the Creative Commons licenses became better known, but they were removed In 2007 voices were loud warning that ccMixter would lose contact with the free music scene. The announcement of record contracts in the context of the corresponding competitions heightened these fears. As a result, Call for Remixes were started to create new works based on music by lesser known artists such as Colin Mutchler, Brad Sucks , Tamara Barnett-Herrin (aka Calendar Girl) and Shannon Hurley .
