Tune-Yards ( spelling : tUnE-yArDs ) is an Oakland , California- based American band signed to 4AD . Their music can be assigned to the genres of independent and experimental music .
history
Tune-Yards was founded in 2006 as a solo project by Merrill Garbus (born March 3, 1979 in Connecticut ). Garbus' parents are folk musicians. Since 2010 she has been working with her partner Nathaniel "Nate" Brenner and changing guest musicians .
The original version of the first album BiRd-BrAiNs from 2009 was recorded solely by Garbus and only with a portable cassette recorder . The mix was done using shareware . This was followed by an edition as a record limited to 1000 copies and a remastered version. For the production of the record covers , old record covers by other artists , some of which were bought at flea markets , were "turned inside out" and the unprinted inside pages were redesigned by hand.
The second album WHOKILL was released in April 2011 and made Tune-Yards better known in the USA. WHOKILL was mentioned as one of the top 2011 albums in many magazines throughout the year, including Time Magazine , Rolling Stone , Spin Magazine and the New York Times . The music list Pazz & Jop of the New York weekly newspaper The Village Voice , compiled by American music critics, lists WHOKILL as “Best Album 2011”.
The third album Nikki Nack was released on May 5, 2014.
style
Garbus loops drum and percussion rhythms as well as her voice and thus underlines her singing. She also plays the ukulele and partly synthesizers . Since she studied temporarily in Kenya , her music also shows influences from African music .
