Ultra Vivid Scene was an American indie pop band formed in 1987 by Kurt Ralske in New York City .

Band history

In 1988 he signed a record deal with 4AD Records and released the first EP She Screamed that same year . In May 1988, recording began for the self-titled debut album that was released in October 1988. Despite the term "band", UVS basically consisted of Ralske alone, who acted as songwriter, musician, producer and sound engineer.

This changed for the first time with the EP Mercy Seat, which was released in 1989 , for which he got help from Melora Creager (cello, vocals), Kristin Kramer (bass) and Byron Guthrie (drums). Also in 1989 Ralske released a free promo CD with the title Something to Eat, on which he had a sticker affixed: “This recording is a gift from Ultra Vivid Scene, freely available through 4AD. Anyone who takes money for this recording is no friend of ours. ”( German translation of the imprint of Something to Eat )

In early 1990, the previously released single Staring at the Sun was released, which entered the official UK single charts at number 97 and in the “Modern Rock Tracks” charts of US Billboard Magazine at number 25. In May followed the second album Joy 1967-1990, on which some guest musicians participated, namely Kim Deal , BJ Cole ( Cochise ), Caroline Lavelle (cellist), Rob McKahey, Nick Muir and Margaret Thorby.

In the summer of 1992, recordings began for another album, for which the solo project again became a multi-member band. In addition to Ralske as singer and guitarist, Julius Klepacz on drums and Jack Daley as bassist were also part of it. Rev was released on October 19, 1992 and became the final Ultra Vivid Scene album.

Some time after the release, the band broke up. Ralske worked solo again and released several more recordings solo or under various project names such as Cathars in the course of the 1990s .
