Vaughan Oliver (born September 12, 1957 in Sedgefield County Durham , † December 29, 2019 in London ) was a British graphic designer .

From 1976 to 1979 Oliver studied graphic design at the Polytechnic in Newcastle-upon-Tyne . In 1980 he moved to London , where he worked as a graphic designer for a year at Benchmark and later for two years at Michael Peters und Partner. While working for Michael Peters, he met Ivo Watts-Russel , the founder of the independent record label 4AD . First he worked as a freelancer for 4AD, creating a fundamental corporate identity and artwork for the label with the unusual music. From 1983 Oliver became Ivo Watts-Russel's first employee. This connection resulted in a whole range of record and CD covers, posters and other groundbreaking graphic design works that influenced many young graphic designers in the years that followed and to this day.

Between 1980 and 1986, Oliver worked with Nigel Grierson , a then-student of photography and film at the Royal College of Art . Under the name 23 Envelope, they created the cover artwork for the groups Modern English , Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil . Oliver's solo projects include Xmal Germany , Colourbox and Clan of Xymox . The collaboration with Grierson ended in 1986, when design graduate Chris Bigg joined the design studio 23 envelope. This collaboration was also fruitful and resulted in many exciting designs.

In 1988 Oliver left his permanent position and from then on worked as a freelancer and changed the name of the design studio to v23. This in no way meant that work for 4AD was abandoned; rather, the record label provided him with the main motivation for his fruitful design work. Switching to freelance status gave Oliver the opportunity to work for different clients outside of 4AD. In the music division he worked for David Sylvian , The Psychedelic Furs and Venture Records. He realized the “dream diary project” for the Japanese artist Shinro Ohtake and Kyoto Shoin Publishers, created the corporate design for various television programs and channels such as Documania for the Spanish Canal Plus or trailers for BBC 's Gimme Eight and Snub TV. He also designed posters for Young Vic Theater and the choreographer Angelin Preljocaj , the magazine design for Raygun Publishing and various book covers.
