Jinkx Monsoon (born 18th September 1987 in Portland as Jerick Hoffer ) is an American drag queen , comedian in, an actor in and singer in. Known Monsoon was mainly due to the victory of the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race . In June 2019, New York voted her one of the 20 Most Influential Drag Queens in the United States.

Life

Hoffer grew up in a Catholic household in Portland, Oregon . Hoffer made his first drag appearances at the age of 16 in the local Escape Nightclub , which is open to all age groups. At the age of 18, Hoffer found out that he had Russian-Jewish roots on the maternal side of the family. According to Hoffer, Jinkx Monsoon is therefore also Jewish , so that Hoffer feels connected again to this part of the origin.

Hoffer did janitorial work during his studies and received a bachelor's degree in theater studies from the Cornish College of the Arts in 2010 . Hoffer has lived in Seattle, Washington State since 2006 .

Hoffer does not see himself as male or female, but as non-binary and for this reason claims to be designated in a gender-neutral way with the singular pronoun they (untranslatable in German), but uses female pronouns in drag performances . Some journalists also use this type of formulation when reporting on Hoffer. In a 2017 interview, Hoffer claimed that he had never felt completely male, but rather gender- fluid or gender-ambiguous, although until recently he had not known the right words for this feeling.

Jinkx Monsoon is inspired by both Hoffer's mother and comedians Lucille Ball , Maria Bamford , Deven Green and Sarah Silverman . The first name refers to the English word jinx thing as much as beschreien means there Hoffer his own words in many situations I pass the Schlechstmögliche. The last name Monsoon is a reference to the character Edina Monsoon played by Jennifer Saunders from the series Absolutely Fabulous . Hoffer also embodies a second plastic character called Deirdre A. Irwin , one from the South derived medium .

Hoffer suffers from narcolepsy , which Hoffer explained to the other drag queens in the first episode of the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race .

Career

Film actor

After their move from Portland to Seattle Monsoon wrote with Nick Sahoyah screenplays for the comedy web series Funny or Die , in the sketches with the titles Monsoon Season , she was as überbehütende by drugs confused, psychotic mother of Sahoyahs figure Kamikaze Monsoon shown.

In 2011, Monsoon starred in the film Waxie Moon in Fallen Jewel by the American-Russian director Wes Hurley , who often casts drag queens in his productions. On February 28, 2013, she and Marc Kenison , the main actor, hosted a premiere event in a Seattle cinema.

The amateur filmmaker Alex Berry shot a documentary series about Monsoon in June 2011. This bears the title Drag Becomes Him as an allusion to Death suits her well (original title Death Becomes Her ), one of her favorite films. The web series, broadcast on YouTube , covered both Monsoon's work and personal life without drag in eight episodes.

In October 2013 it was announced that a feature film based on Drag Becomes Him was being planned and would be funded by Seattle-based producer Basil Shadid. With additional money from a Kickstarter campaign in March 2014, the project was finally implemented. Monsoon announced on Instagram on March 17, 2015 that the production would premiere on April 29, 2015 at the local Cinerama.

In 2015, Monsoon worked again with Hurley as an actress in his horror comedy web series Capitol Hill , which is published on the Huffpost website .

Theater actor

In January 2012, Monsoon played the character Moritz in the musical Spring Awakening at the Balagan Theater in Seattle. Misha Berson praised her singing and stage presence in The Seattle Times , but claimed that she was overly extravagant, making too many faces and posing. This sparked controversy among the city's LGBT community, members of which displeased Berson's criticism. Dan Savage defended Monsoon in a guest post in a local newspaper, claiming that she hadn't played too extravagantly as Moritz was not necessarily straight but could also be viewed as secretly homosexual . From July to August of that year, Monsoon appeared as Angel at the 5th Avenue Theater in Rent .

In January 2013, Monsoon played the title character in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Moore Theater. In June of that year, she starred in a co-production of the 5th Avenue Theater and the Seattle Men's Chorus by Hairspray . This was both a reading production and a concert, in which costumes and a limited number of props were available, but there was no stage design and no choreography was practiced, and the male choir with the actors was on stage. In December, Monsoon played again for a week in Hedwig and the Angry Inch , this time again at the Balagan Theater.

Monsoon also embodied in the one-act play - theater - Musical The Vaudevillians the role of Kitty Witless . In addition to her, the co-author Richard Andriessen was used as an actor and singer, he played Dr. Dan From Dandy . The piece is about two burlesque artists who die in the cold in the Antarctic , but come back to life due to global warming and are horrified to discover that many of their songs, such as Girls Just Want to Have Fun, have been plagiarized. The Vaudevillians performed at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City from July to November 2013 . The ensemble also toured Australia in 2015 , for which Monsoon received a nomination for the Helmann Award .

Monsoon was named one of the 2013 Artist of the Year by local City Arts Magazine alongside Megan Griffiths , Macklemore , Ryan Lewis and Wes Hurley .

RuPaul's Drag Race

On November 19, 2012, Logo published a list of the 14 participants in the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race , which included Monsoon. She was inspired to apply for the show by season four winner Sharon Needles , who stood out for her very idiosyncratic personality and detailed biography. During the season, Monsoon won the two of a total of eleven challenges named Snatch Game and Drama Queens . In the Snatch improvisation she imitated Edith Bouvier Beale , in Drama Queens Wilmer Valderrama played the lead role with her in a fictional telenovela . Monsoon was in the last two in the eleventh episode, but was able to prevent them from being eliminated by winning the lipsync singing. On May 6, 2013, Monsoon won the season and $ 100,000 in prize money. She was also on the song Can I Get an Amen? Involved in the melody of We Are the World , which was sung by the season participants and RuPaul . All sales went to the Los Angeles LGBT Center .
