The main roles are played by Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens .

action

Kyle Kingston is the arrogant son of the hugely successful news anchor Rob Kingston. At his school he is running for the office of environmental chairman in a fiery speech against ugly people. Although he has no content in his election campaign and only strives for the office to polish up his vita, he wins. He invites the witch Kendra to a ball held on the occasion of his victory in order to humiliate her in front of the assembled team. At this ball he also met the socially committed Lindy, with whom he flirted. But towards the end of the night Kendra puts a curse on him. He transforms into a bald man with grotesque scars and tattoos. If he doesn't find a girl who really loves him within a year, he'll keep his looks forever.

His father pushes him to an apartment in New York City and assigns him the housekeeper Zola and the blind tutor Will. Although he assures Kyle that he wants to support him, he cancels all meetings with him. In isolation that was not chosen voluntarily, Kyle spends half a year in secret. When he dares to go to a costume party, he meets Lindy again and even talks to her. In the following years he observed the young woman without her noticing him. When Lindy's drug addict father kills a thug in an argument and swears revenge on another, he sees his chance. He convinces Lindy's father that his daughter is safe and in good hands with him. Lindy is led to believe that Kyle's father is on friendly terms with her father. Kyle protects his face with a black mask because he's not ready to reveal his looks just yet. Very slowly he feels his way to Lindy, supported by Will and Zola. Over time, a romance develops between the two of them.

Since he doesn't have much time left, Kyle puts everything on one card and drives Lindy to his father's vacation home. Just at the moment when the two are getting very close, the young woman receives a call that her father has been hospitalized because of an overdose. Kyle hands her his handwritten love letters before the train departs. However, he is convinced that everything is lost anyway, he no longer reports to Lindy and does not respond to her calls either. When the time allotted to him inevitably comes to an end, Will and Zola get Kyle to finally see Lindy. He takes all courage and visits Lindy at school just before she wants to start a long-planned trip to Machu Picchu . Lindy is happy to see him, kisses him and says the magic three words. Kyle gets his original look back and explains everything to her. As a happy couple, they travel together.

But everything is turning out for the better for Will and Zola too. At an interim meeting with Kendra, Kyle had negotiated with her that Will regain his eyesight and that Zola would be reunited with her children if he found someone who loved him regardless of his looks. In the final scene, Kendra enters Kyle's father's office as the new assistant.

background

The film is based on Alex Flinn's novel Beastly . CBS Films bought the rights in December 2007. Filming was originally scheduled to begin in 2008, but a writers Guild of America strike prevented it. In February 2009 Daniel Barnz was engaged as a director and screenwriter. Susan Cartsonis of Storefront Films produced the film with co-producer Roz Weisberg .

Amy Baer of CBS Films expressed her excitement about signing Barnz as follows:

“Daniel's fresh vision makes him one of the most exciting directors of his generation. We are thrilled to partner with him as he brings his unique voice to arguably the most universally resonant myth in storytelling. "

“Daniel's fresh vision makes him one of the most exciting directors of his generation. We are excited to work with him because he uses his own film language to film one of the world's most famous myths. "

In the script, Barnz was also inspired by the film drama Teen Lover . Barnz said several times that he would like that this Beauty and the Beast- inspired story by Flinn was told from the perspective of the beast and focused more on romance than on the fantastic elements.

Pettyfer's makeup was complicated, requiring multiple coats of makeup and prostheses. It consisted of 67 individual parts, as well as 60 tattoos and scars. It took seven hours to put on all the make-up and three hours to put on the face. However, the appearance of the character differed from the descriptions of the template. Tony Gardner and Alterian, Inc. were responsible for the design. Jamie Kelman put on the makeup. The costumes came from Suttirat Anne Larlarb.

Beastly is one of the earliest feature films from CBS Films. The film had a budget of 17 million US dollars . Filming began on June 13, 2009 in Montreal , Québec , Canada and continued through August. The first trailer was filmed at Walter Payton College Prep High School in Chicago . Other locations were Vieux-Montreal and Laval, as well as the Parc du Mont-Royal in Montreal ( Central Park in New York in the film ) and the Diner Place Milton in Montreal. A total of 45 days of shooting were used.

The soundtrack was composed by Marcelo Zarvos . The film also features songs by Natalia Kills and the Swedish independent band Marching Band .

Differences from the novel

The film differs from the novel in various areas. Many of these points are parallels to the story Beauty and the Beast (transformation into a hairy monster, life in the castle ...) and are lost in the film:

  • In the book, it's a normal school ball. The subject of "environment" does not appear.
  • Kyle is turned into a hairy clawed monster in the book. He calls himself Adrian and not Hunter.
  • In the book, a kiss breaks the curse, not the words "I love you". Kyle also has two years to find love.
  • Kyle's father pushes him to a castle-like house in Brooklyn. The housekeeper is called Magda.
  • The magic mirror does not appear in the film. Kendra is portrayed as less compassionate.
  • Kyle asks his father for a tutor himself.
  • In the book, he meets another girl at the costume party whom he injures.
  • The trip to Machu Picchu does not occur.
  • Kendra doesn't take care of Kyle's father. Instead, she turns out to be the housekeeper Magda and returns to her family thanks to Kyle's selfless wish.
  • Kyle's last name is Kingsbury.

publication

Alliance Films from Montreal released the film in Canada, Sony Pictures took over the international distribution. The US theatrical release should actually take place on July 30, 2010. However, CBS Films and Alliance Films decided to move the film release to March 2011 in order not to expose it to the competition with the literary adaptation Miraculously . The theatrical release took place on March 4, 2011. The film opened on April 7, 2011 in Germany.

Reviews

The film was ranked # 45 on a list of the most anticipated films compiled by The Times in 2010. Hudgens and Pettyfer have been honored by the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) as "Stars of Tomorrow". However, after the film was released, it received a number of bad reviews in the United States.

"Dröge horror romance, which wants to sing the praises of the importance of 'inner values', but itself sticks too much to show values and superficialities and presents figures that are too clichéd to convey this in a halfway credible way."

“Contrary to what the title suggests, 'Beastly' is neither beastly nor snappy. Rather, it is oozing with kitsch and cliché. [...] Like its template, 'Beastly' wants to tell the story of the magic of inner values, but relies only on its external factors: on its attractive young actors, its haunted story of kidnapping and seduction, and the gimmicks with zoom , Time lapse and magic flowers. "

The editorial staff of Filmstarts was of the opinion that the director with his film adaptation "failed spectacularly. In addition to the consistently flat dialogues, it is above all the course of the plot, which appears to be constructed at all times, that makes 'Beastly' fall into insignificance. All scenes clearly emphasize their dramaturgical function and make 'Beastly' appear constructed at all times, especially since the script does not develop the twists and turns and key moments from the characters, but instead makes permanent claims. In this way, Kyle's central development from nasty handsome to empathic freak loses credibility unduly. "
