Will Wehling

Will Wehling (born October 12, 1928 in Recklinghausen ; † February 4, 1975 ) was a German film critic and from 1971 until his death head of the West German Short Film Festival .

Life

Wehling was born on October 12, 1928 in Recklinghausen . As a film critic he wrote for Die Welt, among others . From 1955 he worked as a freelancer for the West German Culture Film Festival. For the III. Festival 1956 Wehling put together the Czech national program. Thanks to his contacts, puppet cartoons by the Czech director Jiří Trnka that had not yet been shown in Germany could be shown. A year later he acted as press spokesman, later also as program director and deputy director of the West German Culture Film Festival. On July 1, 1966, Wehling entered the service of the city of Oberhausen . After Hilmar Hoffmann became City Councilor for Culture in Frankfurt am Main in 1970 , he took over the management of the festival from him at the West German Short Film Festival in 1971 . He held this position until his death a few weeks before the 1975 festival .

Will Wehling Memorial Prize

After his sudden death, the employees of the Kurzfilmtage awarded the Will-Wehling Memorial Prize twice . This prize was awarded in 1975 to Nedeljko Dragić for Dnevnik and A hetedik nap elé by László Sólyom and in 1976 to Shūji Terayama for Tale of Labyrinth .
