Große Freiheit (international title: Great Freedom ) is an Austrian-German feature film by Sebastian Meise from 2021 with Franz Rogowski , Georg Friedrich , Thomas Prenn and Anton von Lucke . The film drama premiered on July 8, 2021 as part of the 74th Cannes International Film Festival , where the film was invited to the Un Certain Regard section and received the jury award.

plot

Hans Hoffmann likes to have sex with other men in the men's toilet. Sometimes they masturbate together, sometimes he has oral or anal intercourse with them. Now Hans has to go to jail for 24 months, and it is not the first time that he has been incarcerated for violating Section 175 . Although he had been rescued from the concentration camp as early as 1945, he was thrown straight into prison afterwards. There he met Viktor Bix for the first time, who made no secret of his disgust for Hans and his inclinations. And then Hans was imprisoned again in the 1950s after he was caught with his great love.

Now, in 1968, twenty years after his acquaintance with Viktor, Hans has to help his former cellmate. He became addicted to drugs during his long stay in prison, is about to have his third hearing and hopes to finally be released.

Production and Background

The shooting took place on 32 days from February 2020. The production was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund , the German Film Funding Fund , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , the Central German Media Funding and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg . Part of were Austrian Broadcasting Corporation and the ZDF .

The film was produced equally by the Austrian FreibeuterFilm (producers Oliver Neumann and Sabine Moser ) and the German Rohfilm Productions GmbH (producer Benny Drechsel).

Crystel Fournier was in charge of the camera. Jörg Theil was responsible for the sound, Tanja Hausner and Andrea Hölzl for the costume design , Michael Randel for the production design and Eva Roth for the casting.

For director and screenwriter Sebastian Meise, this was his third feature film after the feature film Still Life (2011) and the documentary Outing (2012).

The premiere was on July 8, 2021 as part of the 74th Cannes International Film Festival , where the film was invited to the Un Certain Regard section . There the streaming service MUBI secured the rights for North America and other territories.

On September 30, 2021, Große Freiheit opens the Hamburg Film Festival . It will also be shown at the Leipzig Film Art Fair in September 2021 . The Austrian theatrical release is planned for November 12, 2021, the German for November 18, 2021, distributed by Piffl Medien GmbH .
