Cannes International Film Festival 2021

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 74th Cannes International Film Festival was held from July 6th to 17th, 2021. The festival had not been able to take place in its usual form last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In 2021 it was again under the direction of President Pierre Lescure , while Thierry Frémaux, as delegate general, was responsible for the artistic direction.

Spike Lee (2011)

The American filmmaker Spike Lee acted as the jury president of the international competition, in which, among other things, the Golden Palm for the best film at the festival was awarded to Titane by Julia Ducournau . The French actress Doria Tillier was chosen as the presenter ("maîtresse de cérémonie") of the opening ceremony and the final award gala .

The festival was officially opened by the Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho , who won the main prize for Parasite in 2019 . The musical film Annette by Leos Carax was selected as the opening film , and the French comedy OSS 117: Alerte rouge en Afrique noire by Nicolas Bedos as the closing film .

Jodie Foster and Marco Bellocchio , who were awarded the Festival Prize (Palme d'or d'honneur), were already the winners .

background

Thierry Frémaux, artistic director of the film festival

The Cannes Film Festival traditionally takes place in May. The originally planned date, May 11-21, 2021, could not be kept due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Frémaux had previously announced alternative dates for the first and second half of July and the second half of August (the summer holidays in France traditionally take place in the first half of August). If the event had only been held from mid-August, there would have been a short window of time to the competing Venice Film Festival , the 78th edition of which is programmed from September 1 to 11, 2021.

The official program was announced on June 6, 2021. Up to two days before the festival began, more than a dozen other films were registered in the sub-sections.

Competition jury

As the successor to Alejandro González Iñárritu , the jury president of 2019 , Spike Lee was announced for the 73rd edition in mid-January 2020 . He would have been the first African-American artist to have held this position at one of the major film festivals. After the 73rd edition was canceled, Lee confirmed several times that he would travel to Cannes again as jury president in 2021. Official confirmation from the festival management took place in mid-March 2021.

The film director, screenwriter, film editor and producer is considered the founder and icon of New Black Cinema as well as the discoverer and promoter of other black directors and actors, including the later Hollywood stars Halle Berry and Denzel Washington . Lee presented his feature film debut, Nola Darling, at the 1986 Cannes Festival , where he also won an award. He received further invitations with Do the Right Thing ( competition 1989 ), Jungle Fever ( participation 1991 ), Summer of Sam ( participation 1999 ) and the episode film Ten Minutes Older - The Trumpet ( participation 2002 ). The great success came at the 2018 festival with the invitation of BlacKkKlansman , who competed in the competition for the Golden Palm and received the second most important award with the Grand Jury Prize . 2020 would be war drama Da 5 Bloods in Cannes will be shown out of competition, so after a dispute in 2017 , a re Netflix production would have reached in the selection.

Jury President Spike Lee will be assisting eight jury members, who were named on June 24, 2021, in awarding the festival prizes. For the fourth time in the history of the festival after 2009 , 2014 and 2018 , the jury consists mainly of women:

Feature films

At the beginning of June 2020, the historical drama Benedetta by Paul Verhoeven von Frémaux was confirmed as the first competition film , which was supposed to compete for the Palme d'Or in 2020. A total of 24 film productions were invited to the competition, including three projects from previous competition winners. Eight filmmakers are competing for the main prize for the first time. The French actress Léa Seydoux was represented with roles in three competition films, but had to cancel her participation in the festival due to a positive COVID-19 test.
