Cannes International Film Festival 2021
The 74th Cannes International Film Festival was held from July 6th to 17th, 2021. The festival had not been able to take place in its usual form last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In 2021 it was again under the direction of President Pierre Lescure , while Thierry Frémaux, as delegate general, was responsible for the artistic direction.
The American filmmaker Spike Lee acted as the jury president of the international competition, in which, among other things, the Golden Palm for the best film at the festival was awarded to Titane by Julia Ducournau . The French actress Doria Tillier was chosen as the presenter ("maîtresse de cérémonie") of the opening ceremony and the final award gala .
The festival was officially opened by the Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho , who won the main prize for Parasite in 2019 . The musical film Annette by Leos Carax was selected as the opening film , and the French comedy OSS 117: Alerte rouge en Afrique noire by Nicolas Bedos as the closing film .
Jodie Foster and Marco Bellocchio , who were awarded the Festival Prize (Palme d'or d'honneur), were already the winners .
background
The Cannes Film Festival traditionally takes place in May. The originally planned date, May 11-21, 2021, could not be kept due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Frémaux had previously announced alternative dates for the first and second half of July and the second half of August (the summer holidays in France traditionally take place in the first half of August). If the event had only been held from mid-August, there would have been a short window of time to the competing Venice Film Festival , the 78th edition of which is programmed from September 1 to 11, 2021.
The official program was announced on June 6, 2021. Up to two days before the festival began, more than a dozen other films were registered in the sub-sections.
