Alexei Alexejewitsch German ( Russian Алексей Алексеевич Герман , scientific transliteration Aleksej Alekseevič German ; born  September 4, 1976 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ) is a Russian film director and screenwriter . Since his father Alexei Jurjewitsch German (1938–2013) was also a film director and screenwriter, he will also be Alexei German jr. called to avoid confusion. His films won several awards, including the Silver Bear .

Origin and career

Alexei Alexejewitsch German was born on September 4, 1976 as the son of the director Alexei Jurjewitsch German and the screenwriter Swetlana Karmalita . His paternal grandfather is the Russian author and filmmaker of Baltic German origin, Juri German .

German jr. studied at the Gerasimow Institute for Cinematography (WGIK) in Moscow.

His first short films received awards at several festivals. In 2003 he made his feature film debut Posledny Poezd (The Last Train), which was invited to the Venice International Film Festival . In 2008 German jr. in Venice the Silver Lion for the feature film Paper Soldier . In his most recent film, Pod electricheskimi oblakami ( Under Electric Clouds ), he worked with actors Merab Ninidze and Chulpan Khamatova, as in Paper Soldier . Pod electricheskimi oblakami received a Silver Bear at the 65th Berlinale for outstanding artistic achievements in the camera category. Behind the camera were Evgeniy Privin and Sergey Mikhalchuk.
