Alexei Jurjewitsch German
Alexei Jurjewitsch German ( Russian Алексей Юрьевич Герман , born July 20, 1938 in Leningrad , † February 21, 2013 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian film director and screenwriter .
Life
German was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg ) in 1938. His father was the Russian writer Juri German . He studied with Grigori Kozintsev until 1960, then worked for the theater and began working as an assistant director for Lenfilm .
His debut film was The Seventh Trabant , released in 1967 , which he directed with Grigori Aronov. He achieved his artistic breakthrough in 1971 with road traffic control . This film was censored and only released again fifteen years later under Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986. Because of these conflicts with the Soviet authorities, he was only able to complete six full-length feature films.
German was married to the screenwriter Svetlana Karmalita ; they had a son, Alexei Alexejewitsch German , who is also a film director. German died of heart failure on February 21, 2013 . His last film It's Hard to Be a God was still in production at the time and was completed by his son that same year.
