It's hard to be a god (original title Russian Трудно быть богом Trudno byt bogom ) is a film drama from the year 2013 . It is the last film by Russian director Alexei German , who died shortly before the film was completed and was completed by his son of the same name, Alexei .

The scififilm is based on the book It Is Not Easy To Be A God by Arkadi and Boris Strugazki from 1964.

The film is only loosely based on the novel by the Strugazki brothers. It is based on the discovery of an alien planet which, like the earth, has developed a society of people who, however, have got stuck at the level of the late Middle Ages. The Earthling Anton was brought to this planet as a researcher and is psychologically broken by his inability to do something about the suffering of the population, which is kept in its ignorance by a clerical upper class.

He travels through the lands disguised as the feudal lord Don Rumata and meets everywhere the horrors who murder all writers and burn books. Because of his superior abilities, he is viewed by many as invulnerable and godlike, which in the end leads him to the realization that it is not easy to be a god.

The film tells fragmentary scenes of this journey, the context of which the viewer can only guess.

Publications

The film premiered in Rome on November 13, 2013 and was released in theaters in Russia the following year. The German theatrical release was on September 3, 2015.

While the reviews within Russia were mixed, the film enjoyed great international success, screened at prestigious festivals and scored 90 on Metacritic .

  • The film was shot from 2000 to 2008 in the Czech Republic and at Lenfilm Studios in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. Aleksei German then worked on editing for years, during which he died in February 2013. His son completed the film in the same year.
