    The film portrays a few days in the life of the Russian writer Sergei Dowlatov in Leningrad in 1971 and picks up on the emigration of his friend and later Nobel Prize winner for literature, Joseph Brodsky . Sergei remains tied to life with his wife Elena and daughter Katya in Russia. His manuscripts are regularly by official Russian media panned who see him as persona non grata see. David, also a friend of Sergei's, sells foreign goods on the black market. Sergei himself tries in vain to find a doll for his daughter there,
