Zhao Liang

Zhao Liang ( Chinese  赵亮 , Pinyin Zhào Liàng ; * 1971 in Dandong Liaoning , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese photographer and documentary film director.

Career

Zhao studied at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang and then until 1994 at the Beijing Film School . He earned his living as a photographer. In addition, he traveled through China and documented the everyday life of outsiders.

At the beginning of the 1990s he lived in the artist village of Yuanmingyuan, on the area of ​​the old summer palace on the north-western edge of the capital, which became a place of creative resistance for many artists. The Chinese authorities demolished the artist village in 1995. The harassment of the artists living there, their expulsion and arrest by the local police is the subject of his first documentary, Farewell Yuanmingyuan .

In Paper Airplane he showed young people addicted to heroin between 1997 and 2001. In a petition , Zhao accompanied desperate people from all over China from 1996 to 2008 who traveled to the capital Beijing to petition against abuse of power by local judicial and police authorities. The documentary had its premiere in 2009 at the Cannes International Film Festival .

Together is a documentary film that portrays the life of AIDS sufferers and their discrimination in China. It is about the casting of AIDS sufferers who should play as amateur actors in the film Love for Live by the director Gu Changwei . Together was allowed to be performed publicly in China.

In Behemoth he documented the destruction of the environment and the inhumane working conditions in coal and iron mines in Inner Mongolia . The film structure leaned against the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri on. The work was created in coproduction with ARTE and had its premiere in 2015 in the competition in Venice.

Zhao usually works on a film project for several years and also deals with the topic in the form of photo and video installations.
