Alice Rohrwacher (born December 29, 1981 in Fiesole near Florence ) is an Italian film director .

Life

Alice Rohrwacher was born in Fiesole as the daughter of a German and an Italian. Her sister is the actress Alba Rohrwacher . She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Turin . In 2005 she worked as a screenwriter, camerawoman and editor on the documentary Un piccolo spettacolo by Pierpaolo Giarolo. Her first film as a director was the 2006 documentary Checosamanca .

In 2011 her feature film debut For the Sky ( Corpo celeste ) was released, which was shown at the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival in the Quinzaine des réalisateurs series . For this film Rohrwacher received a Nastro d'Argento for Best Newcomer Director and the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award at the Göteborg International Film Festival .

The 2014 social drama Land der Wunder , an Italian-Swiss-German co-production, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival .

At the end of June 2018, Rohrwacher became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

In 2019 Rohrwacher was appointed to the competition jury of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival .
