Kogonada (* in Seoul ) is an American film critic and filmmaker of South Korean descent. The spelling :: kogonada is also used for his artist name .

Life

Kogonada was born in the South Korean capital Seoul . As a child, he emigrated to the USA with his family. Kogonada spent most of his life in Chicago . His name was based on a nickname that his family used for him in his childhood and that he also used in his academic career as a film theorist, occasionally also in the spelling :: kogonada. He is also a film critic and author of a number of video articles on world-famous filmmakers and film movements from the classical era to the present day, such as neorealism, Fellini, Bergman, Hitchcock and Linklater.

Kogonada's debut film Columbus premiered in 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival .
