The film was produced by Austrian KGP Filmproduktion (producers Barbara Pichler and Gabriele Kranzelbinder ), in co-production with French Zorba Productions , Belgian Panache Productions and Taiwanese Flash Forward Entertainment . Filmladen (Austria) and ARP Selection (France) took over the distribution .

Jean-Louis Villard directed the camera. Hjalti Bager-Jonathansson and Karim Weth were responsible for sound, Zoe Wang for costume design, Liao Huei-Li for set design and Hsieh Jing-Wei for make-up.

Moneyboys is CB Yi's first feature film, which he worked on for eight years. In the course of research, he came across a book with interviews with over 2000 young Chinese sex workers, from whose stories he formed his main character. Originally, Yi also wanted to shoot the film in the PRC . After the temporary disappearance of actress Fan Bingbing , the film office issued an appeal not to make certain films. So Yi went to Taiwan.

reception

Bert Rebhandl wrote on DerStandard.at that film lives from the tension between traditional life with children and starting a family, as well as free life in the anonymity of a city. He finds a beautiful, unobtrusive aesthetic form for this tension. The film clearly shows how quickly progress in China has torn the generations apart.

Jakob Walter awarded six out of ten points on film-rezensions.de and said that the film was visually more appealing and cleverly dealt with the subject of prostitution and homosexuality critically. However, some lengths, as well as many storylines that go nowhere, ensure that the hoped-for social criticism and tragedy of the film peter out.
