Tom Mercier ( Hebrew טום מרסייה; * 1993 in Israel ) is an Israeli theater and film actor .

Life

Tom Mercier studied at the Yoram Levinstein Acting Studio in Tel Aviv .

Mercier made his film debut in 2019 with the leading role in Synonymes by the Israeli director Nadav Lapid , who discovered him when he was still an acting student. In Lapid's semi-autobiographical film, he plays Yoav, a young Israeli who has just come to Paris with the highest expectations and is trying to free himself from his nationality as quickly as possible. Similar to his film character, Mercier taught himself French , moved to Paris and broke off all contact with Israel in preparation for filming.

In his review of Synonymes on critic.de, Nino Klingler explicitly addresses Mercier's portrayal: “A body filled to bursting with memories. A spirit inspired by the desire to suppress. Traumatic energy that has to go. A mouth that babbles and babbles in a foreign language, a language that is free from the burden of what has been experienced. Movement, restless movement. The body, the mouth, the movements belong to the actor Tom Mercier; the memories, the trauma, the past belong to the character he embodies: Joav, an Israeli, stranded in Paris, fled from the experiences in the military of a country that for him is doomed. (...) ”The American trade journal Variety writes enthusiastically about the“ exceptional newcomer ”:“ Fearlessly, the newcomer literally throws himself into scenes that almost explode with energy, dares to take on a role that requires a confusing degree of physicality. Even if he wasn't naked, and he often is, Mercier has a body language and presence that makes clothing seem superfluous. "

Synonymes celebrated its world premiere in February 2019 at the Berlin International Film Festival , where it won the festival's main prize with the Golden Bear . Mercier also landed a starring role on the television series We Are Who We Are , which is slated to air on HBO later in 2020.

Mercier currently lives in Paris.
