Kleber Mendonça Filho (* 1968 in Recife ) is a Brazilian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Mendonça Filho studied journalism at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and worked as a journalist and film critic after completing his studies. He has also worked as a filmmaker since the 1990s and created various experimental short films and documentaries with his own production company CinemaScópio. His first feature-length documentary was Critico in 2008 , in which 70 film critics and directors have their say.

In 2012 Mendonça Filho released his first feature film O Som ao Redor . In the film, the coexistence of several tenants in Recife is disrupted when a private security company is hired for the apartment complex, and different security and insecurity scenarios develop. O Som ao Redor , who has received over 30 awards at international festivals, marked Mendonça Filho's breakthrough as a filmmaker. In his second feature film, Aquarius , Mendonça Filho also dealt with the living situation in Recife. For the film about a retired music journalist ( Sônia Braga ) who is resisting the demolition of her residential complex, Mendonça Filho was again awarded over 30 film prizes, including the Prix ​​du Syndicat Français de la Critique in the category Best Foreign Film , the FIPRESCI -Prize of the International Festival of New Latin American Film and the Sydney Film Prize of the Sydney Film Festival for best film. He was also nominated for the Palme d'Or and the Queer Palm at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival .

In 2020 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .
