The Bible Code is a German-Austrian-French adventure film from 2008 . The film was first broadcast as a two-part on September 1 and 2, 2008 on ProSieben and ORF . On September 14, 2009, the film was broadcast in one piece on ProSieben. The staging is based on the controversial non-fiction book of the same name by the American journalist Michael Drosnin and his theory, according to which the original Hebrew text of the Bible (the Tanakh ) should contain a hidden interval code with which one can discover predictions about the future using a mathematical process .

action

Shortly after her release, the former police officer Johanna Bachmann received a call from her father Christian, who was believed to be dead, and asked her to meet. But when they meet, the Bible Student is shot. With the last of his strength, he warns of an attack on the Pope and gives his daughter a laptop , a USB stick, a notebook and a key. In the devastated apartment of her father, Johanna meets her father's assistant, the French Simon Maler. When the two of them search the office for clues, shots are fired. The violent Cardinal Rhades threatens them because Christian Bachmann discovered four prophecies in the Holy Scriptures with the help of a secret Bible code before his death .

After a chase over the roofs of Munich , Johanna phoned Ephraim Blum, a colleague of her father's. He invites her to Graz , but when she arrives there with Simon, Blum has disappeared. Simon examines the texts stored in Phoenician Hebrew on the laptop and discovers that the first prophecy (“The day of revelation is the day of your death”) has already occurred.

In a monastery on the Loup River in Provence , Johanna and Simon meet Blum, who tells them something about the Sibyls . With the help of the Bible, these prophets could see into the future and serve as counselors to the mighty of the Church. When her enemies appear, Blum is shot and Johanna destroys the laptop. Together with Simon, she is captured by Rhades' henchman Thadeus. But a young monk of the black order saves Johanna and Simon at the last moment. Together the trio travel to the Vatican to warn Pope Innocent V of the assassination attempt, which the second prophecy ("The grace of God accompanies the death of the high prophet.") Suggests together with Bachmann's last words. When they stand in front of the Holy Father, the black monk who accompanies Johanna (translated the name means “the grace of God”) turns out to be a traitor and stabs the Pope.

Andreas Imhof and a white monk bring Johanna and Simon to the monastery of the Prelature of the Holy Stars (sancti stellares) in Styria . There Johanna surprisingly meets the Pope, who survived the assassination attempt. Innocent tells her about the sinister plans of Cardinal Rhades of Avignon , who wants to become Pope himself. He also reveals to her that the seers were the only women in this monastery. The last seer, Nora Weber, disappeared just over 100 years ago together with the star disk, which is essential for deciphering the Bible code. Andreas Imhof shows visitors the library, which contains many old manuscripts from the Bible. Simon discovers a Hebrew monogram on Nora's papers that refers to Johanna.

While Johanna learns that her ex-colleague Markus has been fatally infected with black smallpox , a traitor sets the library on fire. Simon convinces her that Rhades is planning a smallpox epidemic to fulfill the third prophecy ("The black armies bring the darkness."). It also becomes clear that the fourth prophecy (“She is walking the way of Isaiah ”) probably relates to Joan. Using a secret code, they discover a map of the Holy Land made by Nora in the monastery. While the two adventurers are flying to Israel , the Pope convenes a consistory to indict Rhades.

In the Negev desert , Johanna and Simon find the village where Nora's grave is located. You meet a young man whose family has been guarding Nora's secret for three generations. In the grave they discover a broken telescope with a map and the original Bible. Then Johanna and Simon have to flee from Rhades' killers again. The new map directs them to Ramon , where a sandstorm holds their opponents back. In the middle of the desert, Johanna suddenly knows where the star disc is. As she holds the disk over the original, she has a vision that reveals Rhades' plan. With the help of the order, Johanna and Simon can get to Rome just in time to prevent the drinking water from being poisoned and to keep the Pope from surrendering to Rhades. Cardinal Rhades then commits suicide.

production

The film was shot on 53 days in autumn 2007 in Munich , Graz , Herberstein ( Styria ), Avignon , Rome and Namibia . The Munich Antiquarium served as the interior backdrop for the scenes in the Vatican and the desert of Namibia, in which the village was completely built, represented the Negev . A real sandstorm interrupted the filming there. The Walchensee power plant and the associated moated castle in Kochel am See served as the waterworks in Rome .

Reviews

“You can't really take what is happening seriously - but thank God no one asks. In the case of the 27-year-old leading actress, one might even imagine seeing her grinning slightly from time to time, and she was also allowed a few sporty, ironic dialogues. [...] In this way it subtly transports the only attitude with which the film can be appreciated: Enjoy trash, and just don't hang too high, the whole thing. The fact that ProSieben subsequently added a 'Galileo Mystery' edition about secret messages in the Bible is another matter. "

“Visually and in terms of content, the TV adventure film is clearly based on the well-known Hollywood blockbusters. What the budget doesn't allow, director Christoph Schrewe compensates with kitsch and close-ups of Cosma Shiva Hagen's pretty face. Munich, Graz, Avignon, Rome and the Negev desert offer space for megalomaniac chases. The story is based loosely on Michael Drosnin's bestseller of the same name from 1997. Mysticism and religion provide silly details for the crude plot. Unfortunately, the production crosses all boundaries of bad taste. "

“Technically complex, but lacking in ideas, emulating relevant role models (TV) adventure and fantasy film. He owes his story to the non-fiction bestseller of an American journalist who tried to decipher the letter sequences and accumulations in the Bible with the help of mathematical formulas. "
