Castle moat festival
The Schlossgrabenfest is the largest music festival in Hesse and one of the largest open-air events in Germany . It has taken place every year since 1999 on the last weekend in May around the Residenzschloss and Friedensplatz and Karolinenplatz in Darmstadt . The musical spectrum ranges from rock , pop , electro , reggae and hip-hop to soul and jazz .
history
When the event was first held in 1999, the festival took place from Friday to Sunday and had 50,000 visitors on two stages. In 2000 the festival was extended by one day and has been taking place from Thursday to Sunday since then. Since 2001 bands have now performed on four stages. 300,000 visitors came to the five-year anniversary. In 2007 there was another stage for the first time, on which only newcomer bands like 2009 Radiopilot played in front of a larger audience. In 2008, 440,000 people attended the concerts and shows of more than 60 bands over four days. In 2011, 100,000 people were at the Schlossgrabenfest at the same time during the international top act, so that people had to be held back at the entrances.
In addition to many smaller regional and national bands, well-known musicians throughout Germany perform every year, for example July , H-Blockx , Die Happy , Donots and The Capones . Every year between seventy and ninety bands appear. At the tenth edition of the open air in 2008, The Hooters was the first international top act to be presented. This development continued, with Right Said Fred in 2010 and Sunrise Avenue in 2011 .
In 2016 there were several sexual assaults during the festival in the form of so-called Antanzens. At the end of May there were 14 reports.
In 2020 the Schlossgrabenfest will not take place for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
Organizational matters
In 2007 some organizational changes were decided; The entire festival area was fenced in and admission controls were provided. In addition, some stages have been arranged differently. In 2011, under the impression of the Love Parade accident in Duisburg , the fence around the site was arranged differently and additional screens were set up on which the main stage program was broadcast.
The Schlossgrabenfest is financed by sponsors and advertising, among other things. Each of the stages is assigned a main sponsor. There are many advertising banners on the premises, and the video transmission on the screens is regularly interrupted by short advertising clips, but without affecting the sound. You are not allowed to bring your own drinks to the festival area. Drinks purchased there are only served in reusable cups provided for this purpose. Visitors can purchase this cup once for a “cultural contribution” of 8 euros (as of 2020). With this, visitors have also been given preferential admission when there are high numbers of visitors since 2017.
