history
The place was first mentioned under the name "Reitbahn" and served as a riding arena. It was later called "Paradeplatz" until it was finally given the current name "Friedensplatz" in 1949. After the Second World War, the square was mainly used as a parking lot. In 1966/1967, a multi-storey underground car park with a nuclear bunker was built by Jakob Wilhelm Mengler under the square . Above ground, the square was divided by concrete raised beds, which were popularly known as "anti-tank barriers".
The square should be fundamentally redesigned from 2015. Due to planning difficulties due to the statics of the underground car park, the start of the renovation was postponed until 2017. Construction work finally began in May 2017, the reopening was on May 25, 2020.
