Abbot Cölestin Baumgartner

Cölestin Baumgartner (born February 9, 1844 in Waizenkirchen , † April 30, 1934 in Stadl-Paura ) was an Austrian Benedictine and from 1890 to 1929 abbot of Lambach Abbey .

Life

Baumgartner joined the Lambach Abbey in 1861, studied theology in Innsbruck and was ordained a priest in 1867. He was active in pastoral care and in various economic offices, was elected prior and administrator in 1889 and abbot in 1890. Due to the poor economic situation of the monastery, he was deposed in 1929 and replaced by coadjutor Jakob Reimer from the Seitenstetten monastery .

He was also a member of the state parliament for large estates and from 1897 to 1911 a member of the Reichsrat. Emperor Franz Joseph I awarded him the Commander's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order in 1902 .
