The Riedegg Castle is a castle in Upper Austria and is located in the municipality Alberndorf in the Mühlviertel , north of the municipal boundary to Gallneukirchen (Riedegg 1). Next to Riedegg Castle is the previous building, first mentioned in 1150, Riedegg Castle . This was converted into today's castle in the 17th century. From 1936 to 2015, the castle was owned by the Mariannhill Missionaries who turned it into an educational house. An Africa museum is also housed in the castle.

Riedegg Castle, which was then owned by Erasmus von Starhemberg , was converted into a castle in 1529 with the help of Turkish prisoners. In 1593 the castle came to Reichard von Starhemberg. According to an inscription, the castle was completely rebuilt under Reichard in 1609 after a fire and the previous building was left to decay. The inscription above the entrance portal reads:

Greetings, oh stranger. This ancestral castle, above which because of its old wooden structure, like a volcano, there was always the danger of fire and which also lacked living space, was newly built - not so much to commemorate yourself and your descendants as to your advantage, when you should like to stay here hospitably; For jewelry, he also led the water down from the neighboring hill in lead pipes and added other gardens to the vineyard on Schlossberg: Richard Freiherr von Starhemberg, Lord von Wildberg, Riedeck, Lobenstein and the County of Schaunberg, Councilor Emperor Rudolf II, in the year after Birth of Lord 1609. "

Around 1750, 385 subjects belonged to Riedegg along with the Breitenbruck rule . In 1933, Prince Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg sold the castle to the Englishman Slater, who in 1936 sold it to the missionaries of Mariannhill . The missionaries first built a monastery in Riedegg, then a school center including a grammar school and an African mission museum.

The Polytechnic School of Gallneukirchen is also housed in the castle. There are also rental apartments in the castle.

In 2015 the castle was sold. A therapy and medical center is to be built here.

Building description

The castle is located on a mountain that rises prominently from the surrounding plain. It is a two-wing building with an inner courtyard. The previous drawbridge has been replaced by a stone bridge. The castle also has an equestrian staircase and a small chapel. There is a garden next to the castle, which is supported by a mighty wall made of quarry stone blocks.

Africa Museum

Since the renovation in the 1970s, the castle has housed a small Africa museum and has a remarkable ethnographic collection. It is the only Africa museum in the Mühlviertel and the history and culture of this continent is also presented.

You can see stuffed animals from the Transvaal and Orange , household appliances of the Zulu tribe , weapons (spears, arrows, axes), jewelry (bracelets, rings, earrings, chains) and religious utensils.
