history

Breitenbrugg Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674

Breitenbruck is mentioned in the Babenberg land register from 1230. The Breitenbruck Castle is mentioned in 1368 as the princely fief of Wolfhart Breitenbrucker. At the time of the Hussite Wars , Breitenbruck was destroyed. Jörg Breitenbrucker sold the castle to Valentin von Hohenegg in 1441; his daughter Sarah brought the castle into marriage with Gotthard von Tattenbach in 1619. In 1627 Hans Handl von Ramingdorf acquired the castle, followed by Count Heinrich von Starhemberg in 1637, who acquired the castle from the inheritance. As later Breitenbruck came to rule Riedegg , it lost its administrative function and began to deteriorate. Anton Pfeffer von Regenheim and his wife should also be mentioned as owners. In the 19th century it was bought by two farmers and converted into a farm. The owner Ferdinand Reindl died in 1923, followed by his son.

Breitenbruck Castle today

The castle, which has become a farm, still contains elements of a well-fortified residence, although essential parts of the building structure, as shown in the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer , have disappeared. It lies on a small slab of rock and used to be surrounded by a pond. The floor plan corresponds to an irregular octagon. The top floor has been demolished. The moat around the castle is filled in today.

In the inner courtyard of the castle there are two sundials, one of which shows the morning and the other the afternoon. Two floors have been preserved from the tower to the right of the entrance. It is faced with wood towards the inner courtyard and serves as a shed. The edges on the outside are rounded. The second tower leads into a cellar, which is equipped with a barrel vault and supporting columns. The interiors on the first floor are well preserved, but the former chapel with its ribbed vault has become a living room. In the hall on the first floor the old no-lamp holders are still attached to the ceiling. On the ground floor there is a hall with a magnificent ribbed vault that was used as a pigsty for a long time. There are still remains of wall paintings in the courtyard .

The walls still have the old windows on the outside, and some of the old window baskets have also been preserved. There is also an exit bay on the outside. New windows are installed on the ground floor. A new entrance gate, enlarged according to the needs of the times, dominates the entrance side. The original Gothic gate with adjacent wicket doors and the drawbridge rollers are still preserved next to the entrance tower.
