Life and work
The academic sculptor Alois Dorn, "sculptor, painter, glass painter, mosaic artist", brother of the painter Johanna Dorn-Fladerer (1913–1988) and of Conrad Dorn (1915–1987), who worked as a sculptor , was one of ten children of the small business owner Johann Dorn and his wife Maria, b. Karl and grew up under poor conditions in Suben am Inn. After elementary school in Suben and the public school in Schärding he received his first training, which was leading him to his later career, at the University School of Woodworking in Hallstatt , as reflected in the dedicated to him short story " A small black wooden hand " by Gertrud Fussenegger reflects . Working on wood was also his special preference in his later artistic activity. From 1927 to 1933 (graduation as "Academic Sculptor") Dorn studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the master class of Joseph Wackerle . Like him, Dorn also saw himself primarily as an architectural sculptor and less as a creator of free sculpture purely for the purpose of exhibition in a museum.
Until 1939, Dorn worked in Munich as a sought-after freelance sculptor on numerous commissioned works. After his discharge from military service, he set up a studio in his parents' house, worked in Salzburg from 1949 to 1951 and lived from 1952 to 1960 in Solbad Hall in Tyrol with Gertrud Fussenegger , whom he divorced from his Munich sculptor colleague Elmar in 1950 Dietz married and had a son, Lukas, with one of them. From 1961 he lived with the family in Leonding in Upper Austria.
Alois Dorn, who was awarded the professional title of " Professor ", was a member of the MAERZ artists ' association in Linz and the Innviertel artists' guild . His grave was in the cemetery of Gallneukirchen , for which he had created a way of the cross from mosaic pictures on the cemetery wall as one of his last major works in order to “'tie the remembrance of the dead to the story of the passion of the Lord' '. The 'Via Sacra', the holy way, begins with the condemnation of Jesus to death, but ends with the message: 'The one you are looking for has risen!' ”Alois Dorn was taken to the cemetery in Leonding after the death of Gertrud Fussenegger reburied.
In October 2008, the city of Leonding organized a commemorative exhibition in the "Galerie 44er Haus" for Alois Dorn's 100th birthday.
