Qırmızı Qəsəbə (until 1991 Krasnaja Sloboda , Russian Красная Слобода ; both means "Red Settlement") is a settlement (qəsəbə) in the Quba Rayon in northern Azerbaijan , on the eastern edge of the Greater Caucasus .

geography

Qırmızı Qəsəbə is located on the left (north) bank of the Kudyal River across from the larger city of Quba .

History and population

Almost the entire population of the settlement, around 3,300 people in 2014, belong to the mountain Jews who have been living in the area since the 13th century. In 1742 the Jews were given permission by the Khan of Quba , Feteli Khan, to build a settlement at the present location. The residents were promised freedom of religion . The original name Hebrew / Jewish Settlement (Jewreiskaja Sloboda) was changed to Red Settlement during the Soviet period .

The Mountain Jews speak for the Persian related language, Tatische or Dschuhuri.

The time after the end of the Soviet Union

After the end of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, more than 75% of the city's 18,000 residents emigrated to Israel and the United States . However, the most successful businessmen from Krasnaya Sloboda were those who went to Moscow and did business there, for example, in the Cherkisovo market . Some of them, such as Telman Ismailov , Sarach Ilijew or God Nizanov, became millionaires and billionaires who own the Hotel Ukraina and the Yevropeisky shopping center in Moscow .

The mountain Jews in the distance ensure that the settlement has good roads and infrastructure. The houses look neat, a new Bet Knesset synagogue has been built, and the cemeteries become the final resting place for some emigrants.
