Xocalı (Rayon)
Xocalı is a rayon in western Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Xocalı (in Armenian Khodschalu and since 2001 called Ivanjan ). Xocalı is located in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region , in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh , in which it has been part of the Askeran Province since February 1992 . In the same year the Chodjali massacre took place.
geography
The district has an area of 922 km². It is located in the mountainous Nagorno Karabakh.
population
According to Azerbaijani data, the rayon had 25,800 inhabitants in 2009. These are spread over 57 settlements.
economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. Above all, grain, wine and vegetables are grown and cattle are raised. Before 1992 there was a building materials plant as well as wineries and breweries.
Culture
There is an ancient necropolis near Xocalı.
