Askeran (province)

Askeran ( Armenian Ասկերան , Russian Аскеран ) is a province of the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic . It is located in the center of the country and surrounds the capital Stepanakert . The province has an area of ​​1,222 km² and in 2005 it had 16,979 inhabitants. The population density is 13.9 people per square kilometer. The capital is the eponymous Askeran .

The province corresponds to the Azerbaijani district of Xocalı , and parts of the district of Agdam, including the current ghost town of Agdam, have been annexed to it. The area is controlled by the Armenian army and is claimed by Azerbaijan .
