Martakert ( Armenian Մարտակերտ , Russian Мардакерт, Mardakert ) is a province in the north of the de facto independent Republic of Arzach in Nagorno-Karabakh , which is officially part of Azerbaijan . The administrative seat is Martakert (Mardakert).

The province covers the north of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region.

After the autonomy of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region was lifted on November 26, 1991, the Azerbaijani government assigned the area to the Kəlbəcər and Tərtər Rajons . From July 1992 to July 1993 the area was in Azerbaijani hands; since then it has been largely occupied by Armenian troops. The Kəlbəcər Rayon also includes areas outside the former autonomous region, which are now under Armenian control and form the Shahumyan Province . The eastern part of the area defined by Nagorno-Karabakh as Martakert Province with the village of Maraga , where the Maraga massacre took place on April 10, 1992 , is again under Azerbaijani control and is administered from the city of Tərtər immediately to the east . To the north lies the Azerbaijani Rayon Goranboy , of which Nagorno-Karabakh claims parts for the province of Shahumyan.

The Sarsang Reservoir and the Armenian monasteries Gandsassar (Գանձասար, Gandzasar ), Jeriz Mankanz (Երից Մանկանց Վանք, Yerits Mankants ), Wankassar and Jegische Arakjal (Եղիշէ Առաքեալի վանք, Yeghishe Arakyal ) are located in the province .
