Vankassar ( Armenian Վանքասար ) is an Armenian monastery in the Martakert province of the de facto independent, but de jure part of Azerbaijan , Nagorno-Karabakh Republic . The monastery is located on the summit of a 681 m high mountain, above the archaeological site of Tigranakert , between the provincial capital Martakert and the ruined city of Aghdam, only a few kilometers west of the armistice line.

The monastery was founded in the 7th century and today consists only of a chapel and a few ruins. Wankassar means mountain monastery in Armenian . The chapel, also from the 7th century, has a cruciform floor plan and was built from cream-colored limestone, which makes Wankassar visible from afar, in addition to its already exposed location. The chapel underwent major restoration work in the 1980s. The cross relief was also scratched from the tympanum . The chapel was slightly damaged during the Nagorno-Karabakh War and then renovated again.
