The Jeriz Mankanz Monastery

The Jeriz Mankanz Monastery ( Armenian Երից Մանկանց Վանք ), also Yerits Mankants according to the English transcription , is a former monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church , which is de facto located in the Martakert Province in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic . Of the complex, which was completed around 1691, 3 buildings are still preserved today.

location

The facility is very remote and is located on a mountain ridge in a densely forested area, just a few kilometers south of the armistice line. Due to the proximity to the front, access is only permitted with prior approval. A road connects the monastery with the village of Mataghis , 15 km away .

Building description

The Armenian inscriptions on the church date the complex to 1691 and name a certain Sargis as the architect. However, some of the tombstones ( chachkars ) also show older dates. The builders were the Israeljans, the princely family of Dschraberd , who ruled from the Dschraberd castle of the same name, only 3 km away .
