Chiaroscuro Quartet

The Chiaroscuro Quartet is a London- based classical string quartet committed to historical performance practice . The name " Chiaroscuro " refers to the technique of light and dark painting, which was developed in the late Renaissance and the Baroque and which served to increase spatiality and increase artistic expression. The Chiaroscuro Quartet sets itself the goal of achieving analogous increases in musical expression with historical performance practice and the associated techniques.

The quartet

The quartet was founded in 2005 at London's Royal College of Music by the Russian violinist Alina Ibragimova , the Spanish violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí , the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and the French cellist Claire Thirion . The quartet plays chamber music from the classical and early romantic periods on gut strings with historical bows. The Observer characterizes the unique sound of this quartet as a shock to the ears in the best sense of the word.

Repertoire and awards

In 2013 the quartet won the Deutschlandfunk award at the Bremen Music Festival. It also won 2015 for the recording of Mozart's Quartet in D minor, KV 421 and Mendelssohn's Second String Concerto in A minor, Op. 13. the German Record Critics' Prize . The growing discography includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Joseph Haydn . The quartet performed the rarely played string quartet in E flat major by Fanny Mendelssohn in a concert on December 6, 2017 at Waldthausen Castle in Budenheim near Mainz .

The quartet works with well-known chamber music partners such as Kristian Bezuidenhout , Trevor Pinnock , Jonathan Cohen , Nicolas Baldeyrou , Chen Halevi , Malcolm Bilson and Christophe Coin . There are concerts all over Europe and Asia. In 2016 the quartet gave concerts in Japan, Tokyo and Hyogo for the first time .
