Building description

The monastery named after Eliseus, an apostle of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was built in the 5th century. The 7 chapels still preserved today and built at different times served as burial places for local elites such as Watschagan III for several centuries . , King of Aghwank († around 510) or Adam, the Melik of Dschraberd († 18th century). The church dates from the 13th century. The many graves distributed over the site and the lack of decorative elements on the buildings are striking. The monastery is surrounded by walls on three sides. The southwest side is bordered by a precipice.
