Şərur (Rayon)
Sharur district is a rayon in Azerbaijan in the Autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan . The capital of the district is the city of Şərur .
geography
The district has an area of 852 km² and borders Armenia in the northeast . In the rayon, which lies on the southern slope of the Lesser Caucasus , there are several mineral springs, gypsum and limestone deposits.
population
The rayon had 102,100 inhabitants in 2009, these are spread over 65 villages.
economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. Mainly wine, grain, tobacco and vegetables are grown.
Culture
There are several ancient cities and fortifications in the district. Evidence of Stone Age settlement can be found in the Gazma Cave. In the formerly important settlement of Yengijar there are still old mosques, partly abandoned baths and a small bazaar.
