Marestella Sunang (born Torres ; born February 20, 1981 in San Jose ) is a Filipino long jumper .

Athletic career

Marestella Sunang gained her first experience in international competitions at the Junior Asian Championships in Singapore in 1999 , where she finished fourth with 6.03 m. The following year, she took part in the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Chile , where she started over 100 meters and was eliminated in the first round with 12.55 s. In 2002 she won the bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Colombo with 6.40 m behind Kazakh Yelena Koschtschejewa and her compatriot Lerma Gabito and finished sixth at the Asian Games in Busan with 6.08 m. A year later she was fourth at the Asian Championships in Manila with 6.34 m and in early December she finished fourth at the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi . Two years later she won the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games in Manila with 6.47 m and silver with 6.63 m at the Asian Championships in Incheon behind the Indian Anju Bobby George . In addition, she qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Helsinki , where she was eliminated with 6.46 m in qualification. In 2006 she took part again in the Asian Games in Doha and was there again sixth with 6.25 m. In 2007 she was again Southeast Asian champion in the long jump in Nakhon Ratchasima and took part in the 100-meter run at the World Championships in Osaka , where she was eliminated with 12.44 s in the first round. In 2008, she took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing for the first time , but did not qualify for the final with 6.17 m .

In 2009 she won the Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane with 6.68 m for the third time in a row and also won the Asian Championships in Guangzhou with 6.51 m. At the World Championships in Berlin , she did not make it into the final again with 6.22 m. In 2010 she took part in the World Indoor Championships in Doha, where she jumped 6.06 m in qualification. At the end of November she finished fourth at the Asian Games in Guangzhou with 6.49 m. At the Asian Championships in 2011 in Kobe , she was fifth with 6.35 m. On the other hand, she won the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang with a new national record of 6.71 m. At her fourth World Championships in Daegu , she missed the finals one more time and jumped 6.31 m in qualification. In 2012 she took part in the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul , where she jumped 5.98 m. At the Olympic Games in London , 6.22 m was enough to qualify for 22nd place. In 2014, she took part in the Asian Games in Incheon for the fourth time , but she did not succeed in a single valid attempt in the competition. In 2015 she won the bronze medal with 6.41 m at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore behind Indonesian Maria Natalia Londa and Bùi Thị Thu Thảo from Vietnam.

In 2016, she finished eighth at the Indoor Asian Championships in Doha with 6.03 m and improved her own national record by one centimeter to 6.72 m in the outdoor season, thus qualifying for her third Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There she jumped 6.22 m again and was eliminated again in the qualification . In 2017 she took part in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar , where she finished fifth with 6.20 m. At the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur she won the bronze medal with 6.45 m behind the Vietnamese Bùi and Londa from Indonesia. At the beginning of September she also took fifth place at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat with 5.97 m. In August 2018, she participated for the fifth time in the Asian Games in Jakarta , where she finished ninth with 6.15 m. The following year she was fourth at the Southeast Asian Games in Capas with a width of 6.16 m.

In 2003, 2004 and 2005 as well as in 2018, Sunang became Philippine champion in the long jump and in 2004 also in the triple jump. In 2013 she paused and gave birth to her son there. Her husband is former Filipino shot putter Eliezer Sunang . She graduated from Far Eastern University in Manila .
