Albin Tahiri (born February 15, 1989 in SR Slovenia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovene- Kosovar ski racer . In 2017 and 2018 he was the first athlete to represent Kosovo at the Alpine World Ski Championships and Olympic Winter Games .

biography

Albin Tahiri was born in 1989 to a Kosovar Albanian father and a Slovenian mother from Ravne na Koroškem in the SR Slovenia , where he grew up. Tahiri began his career as a ski racer for the Slovenian Federation, but decided to change nations shortly after Kosovo declared independence. He mainly trains in Slovenia, Italy and Austria .

Tahiri achieved a first top place with second place behind Klemen Kosi in 2008 in a national youth race in Abetone . Towards the end of the season he achieved several top 10 placements in Citizen races in Austria. At the 2009 Slovenian championships, he finished ninth in the Super-G. He was able to repeat this result at the Macedonian championships in 2012 in slalom. In January 2010 he achieved his best international results so far when he finished second in the FIS giant slalom at Erciyes and won the slalom the next day.

On January 23, 2017, Tahiri made his European Cup debut in the Super-G of Méribel and finished in 81st place. In three other starts at the same location, he achieved a 47th place in the combination as the best result . In February Tahiri took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz . After Kosovo had only become a member of the International Olympic Committee in December 2014 , Tahiri was the first ski racer to represent his country in an FIS World Championship and one of the first winter athletes to compete in international championships for Kosovo. On March 4th, he made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora .

In September 2017 Tahiri graduated from the University of Ljubljana with a degree in dentistry .

In February 2018, Tahiri took part in the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang as the first athlete to fly the Kosovar flag and was one of the few ski racers to classify in all five individual disciplines. His best result was 37th in the combination.

In 2019 he took part in the World Championships in Åre , Sweden .
