Robert Feidenhans'l

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Krarup Feidenhans'l (born June 29, 1958 in Haderslev ) is a Danish physicist and science manager of major European research . He was head of the Niels Bohr Institute and has been Managing Director of the large research facility European XFEL in Hamburg since 2017 .

Professional background

After graduating in physics and mathematics in 1983, Feidenhans'l received his doctorate in physics from Aarhus University in 1986 . In the same year he took a position as a scientist at the Risø DTU research center in Roskilde . There he became program manager for surfaces and interfaces in 1993 . In June 2001 he became head of the materials research department in Risø with around 150 employees.

In 2005 he took up a professorship for X-ray physics at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen . Two years later he became deputy head of the institute and then acting institute director in 2012.

At the end of 2016, he gave up the management of the Niels Bohr Institute and in January 2017 took up a position as managing director at the international research facility European XFEL in Hamburg as the successor to Massimo Altarelli .

In the course of his career Feidenhans'l was active in various advisory and leading bodies of Danish, foreign and international research institutions, from 1995 to 1998 as a member of the Research Advisory Board for Synchrotron Radiation at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY), from 2006 to 2010 as Chairman of the Board of Directors of European synchrotron radiation source ESRF (previously 2002–2005 as deputy chairman) and from 2010 as chairman of the board of the European XFEL .

Services

Robert Feidenhans'l's research concerns experimental surface physics and nanophysics, for example the research of nanowires , and in particular the development of X-ray techniques for material analysis. He was also involved in the development of imaging X-ray methods for the three-dimensional characterization of the microstructure of materials, biological tissue and for food analysis.
